New York City launches Bronx busway and Brooklyn BRT projects

Mayor Zohran Mamdani and NYC Department of Transportation Commissioner Mike Flynn announced the city’s first dedicated busway on Tremont Avenue in the Bronx. The corridor, serving about 39,000 daily riders on the Bx36 route, will feature east‑ and west‑bound bus lanes and a shared bus‑bike lane, with redesigned intersections to improve safety. Between 2020 and 2024 the corridor saw 630 injuries, including 46 severe cases and four deaths; the busway is expected to raise bus speeds by up to 60% and cut injuries by as much as 45%.

At the same time, the city unveiled a community‑engagement process for three major Brooklyn corridors—Flatbush, Utica and Church Avenues—that carry roughly 150,000 riders daily. A central bus lane is already under construction on Flatbush Avenue, and a full Bus Rapid Transit system is planned for completion by 2030. Residents can submit feedback online and attend meetings through October 31.

Both initiatives are part of the broader “Next Stop: Fast Buses, Better Service” plan announced with Governor Kathy Hochul and the MTA, which aims to make 175 bus routes up to six minutes faster for nearly 200,000 daily passengers across New York City.
