New York City launches Manhattan street overhaul and completes Brooklyn bike lane

New York City officials have announced significant transportation infrastructure updates in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Construction has commenced on a major redesign of 116th Street in Manhattan, aimed at improving transit for 65,000 daily riders across 10 bus routes. The project includes 2.5 miles of new bus lanes, dedicated traffic signals known as queue jumps, protected bike lanes, and 35,000 square feet of new pedestrian space.

In Brooklyn, the redesign of Ashland Place is now complete, establishing a two-way protected bike lane that fills the final gap in a 5.5-mile corridor connecting Sunset Park to DUMBO. The area, previously nicknamed ‘Crashland’ due to a high concentration of accidents, has been transformed into a one-way street to facilitate safer cycling and pedestrian movement. The completion of this link is intended to better connect cyclists to Manhattan, North Brooklyn, and Western Queens.
