New York City launches public toilet pilot and pothole repairs

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has launched a $4 million pilot program to install 17 new modular public toilets across the five boroughs. These self-contained units, provided by the company Throne, do not require connections to city water, sewage, or electrical grids, allowing them to be placed in high-traffic areas such as near Yankee Stadium and on Manhattan streets. The high-tech units feature 21 sensors to detect cleanliness, air conditioning, and a 10-minute time limit per visit.

In addition to the sanitation initiative, the city is addressing infrastructure maintenance. The administration reported that crews are currently repairing an average of 3,000 potholes per week, having addressed 200,000 potholes since the beginning of the year. The city has also renovated 757 miles of traffic lanes across its boroughs during this period.
