New York City health officials report that 90 people have been infected with Legionnaires’ disease as a result of contaminated cooling towers on the Upper East Side. Seventy‑seven cooling towers tested positive for Legionella, and the city ordered cleaning and disinfection of all affected buildings, completing the work by July 16.

No new cases have been reported since July 17, and the outbreak appears to be slowing. Six people have died, making the latest victim the sixth confirmed fatality. Six patients remain hospitalized. City officials say the source, likely a single cooling tower, has been eliminated.

The outbreak, first identified on July 2, has drawn criticism from community leaders but has prompted a coordinated public‑health response to prevent further spread.
