New York City legislation proposes extending beach and pool seasons

New York City beaches and pools have officially closed for the year, but a new legislative proposal could significantly expand the summer season in the future. Introduced by City Council Member Shekar Krishnan, the bill, known as Introduction 262, aims to extend the swimming season into the second Sunday of October and move the opening date to the second Saturday in May.

The legislation also proposes increasing daily operating hours for beaches from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. to a window of 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. For city pools, the bill suggests indoor hours from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Krishnan cited climate change as a primary driver for the proposal, stating that as summers lengthen, the city must ensure residents can enjoy the beach safely.

While the bill has nine co-sponsors, it is currently with the Committee on Parks and Recreation and has no scheduled vote. Previous attempts to pass similar legislation failed due to concerns from the Parks Department regarding the impact of staffing and operational costs on the city budget.
