New York City Marathon: 24-year-old runner dies

A 24-year-old woman, identified as Rachel A., died during the New York City Marathon after collapsing a few kilometers before the finish line in Central Park.

While official statements from the medical examiner and hospital were not immediately available, US media outlets reported that doctors told the victim's father she died of rhabdomyolysis. This condition involves the breakdown of muscle tissue due to extreme physical exertion, which can release toxic components into the bloodstream and kidneys.

The victim's father reported tracking her progress from Pennsylvania. He noted that she had sent messages during the race, initially expressing euphoria, but later sent messages indicating discomfort at the 29 and 32-kilometer marks before communication ceased.
