New York City Mayor demands end to ICE operations after Bronx shooting

A confrontation between New York City officials and the federal government has escalated following an ICE enforcement operation in the Bronx. During the incident, federal agents opened fire on a vehicle, striking 28-year-old Oscar Belgal in the neck. A five-year-old child was present in the vehicle at the time of the shooting but was not physically injured.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has condemned the incident, calling for the immediate cessation of ICE operations within the city and demanding the agency be abolished. Mamdani also requested the release of Belgal from federal custody. In response, Trump administration border czar Tom Homan stated that federal immigration enforcement will continue in New York City and state regardless of the mayor's demands.

Federal authorities identified Belgal as a Dominican national with a criminal record, including charges for theft, assault, and armed robbery, who was wanted under federal immigration laws. While the Department of Homeland Security noted that agents were unaware of the child's presence in the car, critics and local protesters have highlighted the trauma caused to the minor. Protests have occurred in Manhattan in response to the shooting, with demonstrators calling for an end to ICE activities.
