New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani Faces Petition to Exclude Him from 9/11 Memorial Ceremony

A petition organized by Giovanni Galante, whose wife died in the September 11 attacks, seeks to keep New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani away from the 25th‑anniversary commemoration at Ground Zero. The campaign, hosted on Change.org, has amassed more than 60,000 signatures, including support from many families of the 2,977 victims, though it does not claim to represent all families.

Petitioners argue that Mamdani’s past statements and associations—such as his refusal to condemn the slogan “globalize the intifada” and his ties to controversial commentators—are at odds with the ceremony’s purpose of honoring the dead and rejecting extremist ideologies. The mayor’s participation is therefore viewed by signatories as an insult to the victims and their families.
