New York City millionaire renters nearly triple since 2020

The number of millionaire renter households in the New York City metro area has increased by 167 percent since 2020, according to an October report from RentCafe. The region now contains 7,296 households earning at least $1 million annually that choose to rent, a figure that is nearly four times higher than the 1,863 millionaire renter households in San Francisco.

While homeownership remains the preference for approximately four out of five millionaire households in the metro area, the population of wealthy renters is growing faster than that of millionaire homeowners. New York also maintains the highest number of millionaire homeowners in the country, with 33,134 households, representing a 131 percent increase since 2020.

In Manhattan, the luxury rental market remains robust. Average monthly rents for high-end properties in the borough often exceed $6,000, with some exclusive residences surpassing $20,000. Key areas driving demand include the Upper East Side, Upper West Side, Tribeca, and SoHo, where renters seek amenities such as doormen, fitness centers, and spacious lofts.
