New York City MTA reports record subway ridership during Halloween and marathon weekend

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) announced record-breaking subway ridership numbers during a busy weekend featuring Halloween and the New York City Marathon.

On Sunday, the subway carried 3.14 million riders, marking an all-time Sunday record and an 11 percent increase over last year’s figure of 2.81 million. This volume represents 109 percent of pre-pandemic Sunday ridership. On Halloween Saturday, ridership reached 3.59 million, the highest Saturday volume since 2016 and the highest post-pandemic Saturday record.

Prior to the weekend, a record-shattering Thursday saw 4.72 million passengers, the highest single-day ridership since the pandemic, representing a 9.7 percent increase compared to the same day last year. Between Friday, October 30, and Sunday, November 1, the MTA carried a total of 11.24 million riders, setting a new post-pandemic weekend record.

Despite the record numbers, some commuters reported issues with lengthy delays and dangerously crowded platforms. Governor Kathy Hochul and MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber noted that the surge highlights the essential role of mass transit for major city events.
