New York City must fund subway police overtime as state aid runs out

A $77 million state fund intended to finance additional NYPD patrols in the New York City subway system has been exhausted. The funding, which was promoted by Governor Kathy Hochul to support increased officer presence, ran out by July, shortly after the start of the city's fiscal year.

As a result, Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s administration must now cover the costs of these extra patrols, honoring an overtime agreement established by his predecessor, Eric Adams. This financial obligation comes amid rising crime statistics in the transit system; NYPD data indicates that felony assaults in the subway rose by 8% this month, while misdemeanor assaults increased by nearly 18%.

The budget situation arrives as Mayor Mamdani manages a $126 billion city budget. While the administration has allocated funds to new initiatives, such as the Office of Mass Engagement and the Office of Community Safety, the exhaustion of state funds necessitates city-level coverage for the existing police overtime deal.
