Bronx cooling towers, including Yankee Stadium, ordered cleaned after Legionella detection
The New York City Health Department has ordered the emergency cleaning and disinfection of 10 cooling towers in the South Bronx following a cluster of Legionnaires’ disease. The investigation, which began on September 10, 2026, follows reports of illnesses in the Melrose and Morrisania neighborhoods. To date, nine people have been diagnosed with the disease, resulting in one death and three hospitalizations.
Preliminary PCR testing identified Legionella bacteria DNA in 10 towers, including one located at Yankee Stadium and another at the NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln medical facility. Health officials clarified that while PCR tests detect bacterial DNA, they cannot confirm if the bacteria are alive or if these specific towers are the definitive source of the outbreak. Culture tests to determine the presence of live bacteria are expected to take up to two weeks.
The city has mandated that all 10 affected towers undergo full remediation, including draining and cleaning, by September 14, 2026. Inspectors have tested a total of 24 cooling towers in the area as part of the ongoing probe. Two properties, 820 Concourse Village West and 1265 Franklin Avenue, were noted for failing to provide required testing documentation. The New York Yankees stated that their stadium tower was cleaned on Sunday and noted that recent water quality tests had been negative.
