New York City piercing shop sued over botched tongue procedure
A lawsuit filed in Manhattan Supreme Court alleges that an employee at Funky Town, a piercing shop in Manhattan’s East Village, caused severe injuries to a customer during a tongue piercing attempt in September.
Elsa Weingeist, 25, claims that employee Shamim Islam repeatedly punctured her tongue at least four times despite her requests to stop. The incident resulted in massive bleeding, requiring Weingeist to seek emergency medical care, where she received a tetanus shot and underwent bloodwork.
According to the complaint, Weingeist discovered that Islam did not possess a piercing license and that the credentials displayed at the establishment did not include piercing certifications or his name. The shop, located on St. Marks Place, has reportedly been in operation for nearly two decades.
