New York City plans five government-run grocery stores

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is advancing a plan to open five government-controlled grocery stores across the city's boroughs to address food deserts. The initiative aims to sell staples at prices intended to undercut private competitors through taxpayer subsidies.

During a recent tour of a proposed site in East Harlem led by the NYC Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC), prospective vendors were shown a vacant, trash-strewn lot under a Metro-North viaduct where no construction has yet begun. While some consultants expressed cautious optimism regarding the project's potential community impact, others voiced doubt following the site visit.

To mitigate the impact on local commerce, the NYCEDC is considering policies to support independent businesses. Waverly Neer, a senior vice president at the NYCEDC, stated that the city is looking into grants and incentives to ensure the stores are “complementary to the neighborhood” and to help local grocers offset potential revenue losses.
