New York City Records 500th Humpback Whale Sighting

Gotham Whale, a Staten Island nonprofit, documented the 500th humpback whale observed in New York City waters. The juvenile, identified as “NYC0500” from its distinctive tail fluke markings, was seen breaching off Coney Island and feeding near the Sail 4th 250 festivities.

The sighting marks a milestone for the New York City Humpback Whale Catalog, which began in 2012. Researchers note a sharp rise in annual sightings—from 10‑30 before 2018 to as many as 100 per year—reflecting cleaner, healthier harbor waters and shifting ocean temperatures that draw whales farther south.

Chris St. Lawrence of Gotham Whale said the event shows New York’s waters are becoming a lifeline for humpbacks, while board vice‑president Paul “PJ” Sieswerda highlighted its significance for understanding and protecting regional marine wildlife.
