New York City Records Historic Low in Homicides and Shootings

Brooklyn reported only two homicides in July, matching a previous record and creating a 29‑day homicide‑free stretch—the longest in the borough’s history. The drop contributed to a 37 % year‑over‑year decline in Brooklyn homicides and accounted for nearly half of New York City’s overall homicide reduction.

Across the city, the New York Police Department said the first seven months of 2026 saw the fewest murders, shooting incidents and shooting victims ever recorded. Major crime fell 6.6 % year‑to‑date, with July alone down 12.7 % compared with the same month in 2025. Shooting incidents dropped 21.3 % in July, while murders fell 32.3 %.

City officials credited data‑driven policing and highlighted the leadership of Mayor Zohran Mamdani, the city’s first Muslim mayor, District Attorney Eric Gonzalez, and Police Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch, who noted the challenges of managing major events such as the FIFA World Cup and the NBA Finals while maintaining public safety.
