New York City rejects school safety requests in Queens
The New York City Department of Transportation has denied a third request from students and faculty at PS 29Q in College Point to install a traffic light at a busy intersection. The request follows a March 2025 incident where a vehicle struck a crossing guard at the intersection of 125th Street and 23rd Avenue, causing significant injuries.
Students at the elementary school launched a “Call to Action” campaign, sending letters to city officials to advocate for speed reduction infrastructure such as stoplights or speed bumps. Queens City Councilmember Vickie Paladino criticized the city's decision, stating that drivers frequently speed through the school zone. While officials installed a four-way stop sign one block east of the intersection, Paladino argued this measure has failed to address the ongoing safety concerns.
