New York City releases 40,000 additional September 11 records

The administration of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has released 40,000 additional documents related to the aftermath of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. This second installment, released on October 21, is part of a court agreement with the advocacy organization 911 Health Watch.

The expanded collection, accessible via the city’s public records portal, now exceeds 200,000 pages. It includes significant materials such as the Harding Memo and the “68 Boxes.” These records are expected to provide survivors, first responders, and families with greater insight into the city’s response and what officials knew regarding potential health hazards and air quality concerns around the World Trade Center site.

To support this transparency, the city’s fiscal 2027 budget has allocated $34 million for the creation and maintenance of the digital portal.
