New York City reports 20,200 serious assaults through September

The NYPD has recorded approximately 20,200 serious assaults through early September, representing a 0.7% increase compared to the same period in 2025. These incidents involved weapons such as knives, firearms, and blunt objects. Additionally, 442 shootings have resulted in 538 victims.

Recent violent incidents in New York City include:

• In Upper Manhattan, a 27-year-old mother was killed with blunt objects in her apartment; no suspects have been detained.

• In Brooklyn, 25-year-old Deandre Creary was arrested at Newark Airport and charged with murder and illegal weapon possession following the fatal stabbing of his ex-girlfriend in a park.

• In Queens, a 53-year-old man was beaten to death with a wooden plank near Rufus King Park. Separately, NYPD cadet Thupten Tenzin was arrested for assault after allegedly striking Dinesh Thapa, who was also arrested for forced touching.

• Other reported violence includes three men being stabbed in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, and a 46-year-old man being stabbed multiple times on a D train at the Fordham Road station.
