New York City is reporting a decline in rat sightings, marking 19 consecutive months of decreases compared to the previous year. According to the New York City Department of Sanitation, reported sightings since the beginning of the year totaled 10,945, down from 13,740 during the same period last year.

Officials attribute this trend to the ‘Trash Revolution’ initiated in 2022. This policy aims to replace traditional trash bags, which provide easy access to food for rodents, with mandatory garbage bins. The initiative has already expanded to include residential buildings with up to nine units as of November 2024, covering approximately 70 percent of the city's waste.

While the city aims to have all municipal waste contained in bins by 2031, pest control company Orkin still ranks New York City as one of the top three cities for rat activity in the United States based on service requests.
