New York City Legionnaires' Disease Outbreak Claims Two Deaths

Health officials in New York City confirmed that the Legionnaires’ disease outbreak on Manhattan’s Upper East Side has resulted in two fatalities. The first death was reported on July 17 after the cluster reached 67 confirmed cases, and a second death was announced on July 19 as the count rose to at least 72 infections. As of the latest update, 9‑12 patients remain hospitalized while dozens have recovered.

Investigators have linked the outbreak to Legionella bacteria found in the cooling‑tower systems of more than 75 buildings, including museums, private schools and residential towers. Property owners were ordered to drain, clean and disinfect the towers, and the city says most remediation work is complete. Health Commissioner Dr. Alister F. Martin said, “I am saddened to report that one person has died… We are heartbroken to learn that another New Yorker has lost their life,” and added that the decline in new cases suggests the source of exposure has likely been eliminated.
