New York City reports record low shootings and murders

New York City officials, including Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch and New York Attorney General Letitia James, announced that the city has seized 4,503 illegal firearms so far this year. Among the seized weapons were 270 untraceable ghost guns.

Data from the first nine months of the year indicates a significant decline in violent crime. Shootings fell by 11.6 percent compared to the same period last year, with 489 incidents recorded. The number of shooting victims decreased by 14.4 percent, totaling 594 people. Homicides dropped by 19.8 percent to 203 cases, breaking the previous record low set in 2017.

Brooklyn recorded the highest number of firearm seizures with 1,239 weapons, followed by Manhattan with 1,095, the Bronx with 1,055, Queens with 868, and Staten Island with 246. Officials attributed the decline to precision policing strategies, the dismantling of illegal gun trafficking networks, and community-based gun buyback programs.
