New York City resident sparks debate over friend accommodations

TikTok creator Bridget Goes, 25, has ignited a social media controversy after arguing that friends visiting New York City should not expect free lodging. In a video viewed by nearly 3 million people, Goes stated that asking to stay at a friend's apartment due to high hotel costs is “rude,” especially if the host did not offer first.

Goes cited the influx of visitors for Harry Styles’ residency at Madison Square Garden as a reason for the increased demand for low-cost housing. She suggested that travelers should utilize hotels or hostels, stating, “If you can’t afford to stay in New York, then you either need to travel home that night, or you can’t afford to go to the concert.” She further noted that guests should provide a “host gift” or treat their hosts to meals if they are accommodated.

The comments have divided social media users. While some agree that visitors should budget for their own lodging, others expressed disappointment, arguing that helping friends save money is a fundamental part of friendship.
