New York City Sanitation Recovers Heirloom Rings from 20,000 Pounds of Trash

A Brooklyn resident accidentally discarded two family heirloom rings—a four‑generation platinum‑and‑diamond engagement ring and a gold‑and‑diamond promise ring—into a residential trash compactor. After the mistake was realized, the resident flagged down two Department of Sanitation (DSNY) workers, prompting a rapid response.

DSNY coordinated a search at a waste‑management facility on Varick Street, isolating the truck and dumping up to 20,000 pounds of trash onto a concrete floor. Using gloves, shovels and other equipment, searchers sifted the material and recovered both rings within about ten minutes. The department advises residents who lose valuable items to call 311 immediately, as timely contact increases the chance of recovery.
