New York City sanitation vehicle targeted with shame sticker
A disgruntled car owner reportedly placed a neon-green “shame sticker” on a New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) vehicle in protest of alternate-side parking enforcement. A DSNY spokesperson stated that the sticker was not placed by an employee, but appears to have been peeled off a civilian vehicle and affixed to the agency's car.
These stickers are used by the DSNY to penalize drivers who fail to move their vehicles for street sweeping. The practice was reinstated in August following legislation sponsored by Manhattan Councilwoman Gale Brewer, which repealed a decade-long ban on the use of such stickers.
The use of the placards has faced criticism from lawmakers and residents, who argue the stickers constitute vandalism and are difficult to remove. The stickers include instructions to use “warm water and a scraper” for removal. In response to the ongoing controversy, the DSNY has expressed hope that the state legislature in Albany will pass a bill allowing for automated camera enforcement to replace the stickers.
