New York City sanitation workers report rise in needle-stick injuries

New York City sanitation workers are experiencing a rise in needle-stick injuries, a trend the Department of Sanitation attributes to the increased use of GLP-1 weight-loss medications. According to department data, 49 workers have been pricked by needles so far this year, contributing to a total of 140 injuries over the last three years.

Medical professionals at Long Island Jewish Medical Center, part of the Northwell Health system, noted an 11% increase in patients using GLP-1 medications. While doctors provide education on proper disposal, the city is launching a public service announcement campaign to urge residents to use hard plastic sharps containers or labeled laundry detergent bottles for used needles.

In response to the safety concerns, the Sanitation Department is seeking increased fines for improper needle disposal to prevent further avoidable injuries.
