New York City shootings leave one dead and five wounded

A series of shootings across New York City on Sunday night left one man dead and five others wounded, including two teenagers. The violence occurred primarily in the Bronx and Queens.

In the Bronx, 29-year-old Luis Cano was shot in the chest in Hunts Point and later died at Lincoln Medical Center. Earlier in the evening, two senior citizens, aged 65 and 72, were wounded in a drive-by shooting near Yankee Stadium while playing dominoes; both were in stable condition.

In Tremont, an 18-year-old was struck by rifle fire and taken to St. Barnabas Hospital. In Queens, a 17-year-old boy was shot in the chest in Far Rockaway and transported to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center in stable condition.

Authorities reported that these incidents contributed to a significant spike in gun crime. Between September 7 and the Sunday night shootings, police recorded 22 shootings with 28 victims citywide, a figure that more than doubled compared to the same period in the previous year.
