New York City students arrested for carrying loaded weapons to school

Two separate incidents involving loaded firearms were reported at New York City schools on Monday, shortly after the start of the new school year.

At Curtis High School in Staten Island, school security officers intervened during a fight between two students. During the intervention, an 18-year-old student, identified as Samuel Owusu, was found to have a loaded firearm in his backpack. Owusu was taken into custody and faces charges of illegal weapon possession and illicit cannabis possession. It was noted that Curtis High School does not have metal detectors.

In a second incident at the Queens School for Career Development in Jamaica, a 17-year-old student was arrested after a loaded firearm was discovered in his backpack during a security check. Due to his age, the case will be handled within the juvenile justice system.

The New York City Department of Education condemned both incidents, stating that weapons must not be present in schools or within the city. No injuries were reported in either case.
