New York City subway expands ADA accessibility via congestion pricing funds

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has launched several accessibility projects across the New York City subway system. Construction has begun on upgrades at the 42nd Street-Bryant Park/5th Avenue complex, which will include four new elevators, a stair-free corridor, accessible bathrooms, and new fare gates. These improvements are funded by revenue from the city’s congestion pricing program, which has raised $550 million during its first year.

Additionally, the MTA announced the completion of accessibility upgrades at the 137 St-City College station in Manhattan. The project added two street-to-platform elevators, making the station ADA accessible for more than 9,400 daily riders, including students and faculty at City College. This marks the 49th station to be made accessible since 2020.
