New York City MTA holds annual subway memorabilia sale

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) held its annual two-day outdoor sale in October, offering retired New York City subway memorabilia to collectors. Held under an elevated bridge in the Coney Island neighborhood of Brooklyn, the event saw enthusiasts queuing for hours to purchase items such as station signs, magnetic cards, and iconic orange plastic seats.

Prices for the relics vary significantly. Large station signs can cost between $500 and over $1,000, while the vintage orange seats from older train cars are priced at approximately $900 each. To manage the crowds, the MTA implemented a policy limiting each visitor to a maximum of 45 minutes at the site.

Notable attendees included filmmaker Spike Lee, who purchased a metal sign for Penn Station. Despite the subway system's frequent criticisms regarding noise and delays, collectors expressed that the weathered and aged items serve as unique symbols that embody the character of New York City.
