Queens subway stabbing: Ecuadorian immigrant Mesias Lojano killed

Mesias Lojano, a 59-year-old Ecuadorian immigrant from Cuenca, was fatally stabbed on a southbound J train in Queens, New York, on Wednesday, September 30, 2026. The attack occurred around 5:20 p.m. as the train approached the Woodhaven Boulevard station.

Police identified the suspect as 25-year-old Jyrell Thomas, a resident of the Bronx. According to investigators, Thomas appeared agitated and was pacing the train car before approaching Lojano. While some reports suggest a possible verbal dispute, the New York Police Department stated that the two men did not know each other and the attack was unprovoked. Lojano sustained multiple stab wounds to his neck and torso and was pronounced dead at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center.

Following the assault, bystanders chased Thomas from the station. He was eventually located by police on the roof of a nearby garage and taken into custody. Thomas has been charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon. He was also taken to a hospital for a psychiatric evaluation. This incident marks the sixth homicide recorded in the New York City subway system this year.
