New York City to Accelerate Bike and Bus Lane Projects

A city charter revision commission led by urban planner Richard Mamdani is proposing a reform that would speed up the approval process for new bike lanes and bus lanes by about one‑third. The plan would shift decision‑making authority from community boards and local council members to the New York City Department of Transportation, prompting criticism that it sidelines neighborhood input while supporters argue it is needed to cut congestion and emissions.

Separately, the NYC Department of Transportation broke ground on an offset bus‑lane redesign of Fordham Road in the Bronx. The project, backed by Mayor Zohran Mamdani and DOT Commissioner Mike Flynn, aims to provide faster, more reliable service for roughly 130,000 daily bus riders, with expected speed gains of up to 28% and dedicated parking and loading spaces for local businesses.
