September 11 attacks: 25th anniversary commemorations held globally FAST-MOVING

The world marks the 25th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks, an event that fundamentally altered global security and politics. Commemorations are taking place across the United States, including at Ground Zero in New York, the Pentagon in Virginia, and Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

In New York, ceremonies include the reading of the names of the 2,977 victims and a drone light show titled ‘2,977 Lights Over New York Harbor’ that recreated the Twin Towers' silhouettes. While President Donald Trump is attending ceremonies at the Pentagon to honor defense personnel, Vice President JD Vance is representing the administration at the Manhattan memorial. Former presidents Joe Biden, Barack Obama, George W. Bush, and Bill Clinton are also expected at Ground Zero.

The legacy of the attacks continues to impact health and society. In Staten Island, the FDNY honored the 343 firefighters lost on that day, as well as 453 members who later died from respiratory illnesses and cancers linked to toxic dust. Internationally, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte reaffirmed the alliance's solidarity with the U.S., recalling that the attacks led to the first and only invocation of Article 5. The United Nations also held commemorations, emphasizing the ongoing global struggle against terrorism.
