New York City unveils 10-year Vision Zero Reimagined plan

Mayor Zohran Mamdani has introduced ‘Vision Zero Reimagined,’ a 10-year plan designed to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries in New York City. The initiative involves 19 city agencies and proposes over 100 policy measures to improve street safety.

Key proposals include the creation of pedestrian-only and pedestrian-priority districts, the expansion of Sammy’s Law to lower speed limits to 20 mph across entire neighborhoods, and the redesign of nearly 200 untreated priority corridors. The plan also aims to implement safety treatments, such as hardened daylighting, at at least 1,000 intersections annually.

To address reckless driving, the administration intends to launch a ‘Super Speeder’ program, strengthen driver-license standards, and crack down on ‘ghost plates.’ City officials noted that a small group of drivers with histories of reckless behavior accounts for 37% of traffic deaths, while 41% of fatalities involve drivers without valid licenses or with multiple prior convictions. Additional measures include expanding protected bike networks, regulating e-bikes and e-scooters, and upgrading the municipal fleet with advanced safety technology like automatic emergency braking.
