Zohran Mamdani's Push Shapes New York Democratic Primary Outcomes

New York held its June Democratic primary on Tuesday, letting voters in all five boroughs select candidates for the November congressional, state and local races. Mayor Zohran Mamdani used the occasion to promote progressive candidates he backs, including former city comptroller Brad Lander in District 10, immigrant‑rights advocate Darializa Avila Chevalier against incumbent Adriano Espaillat in District 13, and Brooklyn President Antonio Reynoso and State Assemblymember Claire Valdez vying for the open seat in District 7.

Early‑voting turnout was sharply down, with just 172,684 votes cast – a 55 % decline from last year and only about 5 % of eligible voters. DSA leaders and Mamdani pointed to the low participation, especially among youth, as a concern, prompting the mayor to tour neighborhoods and rally support with Senator Bernie Sanders. Voter‑registration data show Brooklyn holds the most registered voters (1.69 million), followed by Queens, Manhattan, the Bronx and Staten Island.

The primaries highlighted an internal Democratic split between the progressive DSA wing and the party establishment, with prominent figures like Alexandria Ocasio‑Cortez abstaining from endorsements. The outcomes will determine which faction leads the party’s opposition to former President Donald Trump in the upcoming general election.
