New York congressional candidate knocked down in NYPD and anti-ICE protest clash
Darializa Avila Chevalier, the Democratic nominee for New York’s 13th Congressional District, was knocked to the ground during a confrontation between NYPD officers and anti-ICE protesters outside a Manhattan hospital. Video footage shows Chevalier near a barricade as a crowd surge and police movement caused her to fall. She was not arrested during the incident.
The clash occurred following an enforcement operation in the Marble Hill area where a federal immigration officer shot 28-year-old Oscar Belgal. Belgal survived a gunshot wound to the neck and was hospitalized. The Department of Homeland Security stated that ICE agents were attempting to arrest an individual with a grand-larceny conviction and that agents feared for their lives during the encounter. The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under intense scrutiny.
