Douglas Elliman faces lawsuit over alleged racial discrimination
A couple, Lisa Renee Olaso and Cyril Christopher, has filed a lawsuit in Queens, New York, alleging racial discrimination in housing. The legal action names real estate broker Helen Tzelios, the brokerage Douglas Elliman, and the property owners as defendants.
The lawsuit stems from an incident in June when the couple, who were relocating from Delaware, arrived to tour a three-bedroom apartment in Flushing. Upon arrival, Olaso reportedly received a text message from Tzelios that read, “Ugh, they are Black,” which appeared to be intended for the property owners.
According to court documents, Tzelios apologized, claiming the message was sent by mistake. The broker also reportedly stated that the comment was made because of “previous problems” involving Black tenants in the neighborhood. The plaintiffs allege violations of the federal Fair Housing Act and New York City human rights laws.
Douglas Elliman stated that it learned of the allegations upon being served and terminated its affiliation with the agent within one hour, maintaining a zero-tolerance policy toward discrimination. The allegations have not been adjudicated in court.
