New York declares state emergency over measles outbreak

New York Governor Kathy Hochul has declared a state disaster emergency in response to a significant rise in measles cases, particularly within rural and under-immunized communities. As of early October, the state has recorded 108 confirmed cases, a figure that more than doubles the total from the previous year.

The emergency order is designed to accelerate the state’s response by expanding the pool of healthcare professionals authorized to administer the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine. This includes paramedics, advanced EMS providers, pharmacists, and midwives. Additionally, the order allows nurses to order testing to facilitate quicker identification of the virus.

While some areas like Ulster County report no laboratory-confirmed cases, other regions such as Montgomery County and Chautauqua County have seen activity. Health officials have also noted rising concerns in neighboring Pennsylvania. To assist with tracking, the New York State Department of Health has launched a Measles Dashboard to provide public updates on the outbreak.
