New York education system faces widespread disapproval in new poll

A new poll conducted by the Empire Center for Public Policy reveals widespread dissatisfaction with New York's education system. According to the survey of likely 2026 general election voters, only 4 percent of respondents believe the state should continue its current course regarding education.

Respondents indicated a need for reform, with 47 percent stating the state should improve student performance and 41 percent suggesting improvements should be made while spending less. The poll follows data showing that New York spends nearly double the national average per student while producing average academic results. In New York City specifically, the budget has reached $45 billion for the 2026 school year, averaging $53,000 per pupil.

The survey also highlights support for increased parental choice, with nearly half of voters supporting a voucher system to allow children to attend private schools. However, there was significant opposition to replacing graduation exams with alternative evaluations, with 66 percent of respondents rejecting the change.
