New York expands free community college for adult learners

Governor Kathy Hochul has announced an expansion of New York’s free community college initiative, specifically targeting adult learners aged 25 to 55. Starting in January 2027, the program will allow individuals to enroll in associate degree programs at the State University of New York (SUNY) or the City University of New York (CUNY) for free, even if they already hold a college degree in a different field.

The expansion aims to help workers pivot careers in response to technological shifts, such as the rise of artificial intelligence. The program covers tuition, fees, books, and supplies after other assistance is applied. Eligible high-demand fields include advanced manufacturing, cybersecurity, engineering, nursing, green energy, and artificial intelligence, among others. Recent additions to the eligible fields include supply chain and logistics, emergency management, and aviation management.
