New York film and TV production spending surges amid tax credit debate
New York City is experiencing a significant boom in film and television production. According to data from ProdPro, production spending in New York rose 87% to $1.61 billion in the third quarter of 2026, making it the second highest in the U.S. after California. City officials, including Film Commissioner Rafael Espinal, report that soundstages are reaching capacity and permit numbers have surged following a post-strike recovery.
However, the economic efficiency of the state's incentive programs is facing scrutiny. An analysis of Empire State Development data indicates that New York paid a record $1.2 billion in film and TV tax credits in 2025. Critics argue these subsidies are inefficient, noting that the cost per full-time job reached $68,538 in 2025, with some projects exceeding $100,000 per job. Reports suggest that between 2018 and 2022, the state received approximately $0.31 in tax revenue for every dollar spent on these subsidies.
