New York Giants Coach Harbaugh Addresses Kicker Race and Achilles Injury Crisis
New York Giants head coach John Harbaugh is overseeing a tight competition for the team's kicker position. After veteran kicker Jason Sanders was released, the roster includes rookie Dominic Zvada, who is emerging as the “heavy favorite,” and Ben Sauls, whose recent field‑goal performance has been described as “ugly misses” in fine conditions. The Giants have also signed veteran kicker Jason Sanders to the Jets, while the Jets released former Giant Younghoe Koo.
Simultaneously, the Giants are confronting a spate of torn Achilles tendons that have sidelined cornerback Thaddeus Dixon, defensive lineman Roy Robertson‑Harris, and receiver Gunner Olszewski. Harbaugh said, “You look for answers, and there are none. You can't predict tendons,” adding that the injuries lack a common denominator in load or movement. To mitigate future problems, the team is adding four new pieces of strength, testing, and movement equipment and will test every player for injury risk, aiming for individualized prevention.
These moves reflect the Giants' broader effort to stabilize both special‑teams performance and player health as the season progresses.
