J.J. McCarthy sets NFL record in Giants debut during loss to Saints
In a Week 6 matchup, the New York Giants lost 34-27 to the New Orleans Saints, a game marked by a significant performance from backup quarterback J.J. McCarthy. McCarthy, recently acquired from the Minnesota Vikings, entered the game in the fourth quarter to replace Jameis Winston after Winston struggled with two interceptions and four sacks.
McCarthy set an NFL record by throwing for 243 passing yards in just over 11 minutes of play, the most in that timeframe in league history. He led three scoring drives, including a touchdown pass to Isaiah Likely, bringing the Giants within one score before a final drive ended in a turnover on downs.
Giants head coach John Harbaugh remained noncommittal regarding the starting lineup for the upcoming game against the Houston Texans, stating it was too early to decide between Winston and McCarthy. While Winston had been filling in for the injured Jaxson Dart, McCarthy’s explosive relief performance has sparked debate over the team’s long-term quarterback direction.
