New York Giants release running back Najee Harris
The New York Giants have released veteran running back Najee Harris following a period of limited playing time and public criticism regarding his role in the offense. Harris, a former Pro Bowler who previously recorded four consecutive 1,000-yard seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, joined the Giants as a free agent in August following a torn Achilles tendon suffered while with the Los Angeles Chargers.
The decision follows a Week 6 loss to the New Orleans Saints, in which Harris recorded only four carries for two yards. Following that game, Harris expressed frustration with the team’s running back rotation, stating it was difficult to find a rhythm with inconsistent opportunities. Giants head coach John Harbaugh had previously noted that the backfield had not yet earned a clear lead role, emphasizing that players must earn more touches through performance.
With Harris gone, the Giants' backfield will rely on Cam Skattebo, Devin Singletary, and Tyrone Tracy Jr. The team also released outside linebacker Jihad Ward as part of its roster moves on Tuesday.
