New York Giants tackle defensive backs overhaul ahead of 2026 training camp

The New York Giants began organized team activities at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center under head coach John Harbaugh, who emphasized preparation for the 2026 season. A key focus is the performance of the defensive backs unit, which is being overseen by newly hired assistant coach Addison Lynch. Lynch, previously a defensive quality‑control coach and cornerbacks coach for the Denver Broncos, is tasked with improving the group that includes recent acquisitions and underperforming players.

Lynch must develop starter Paulson Adebo, whose 2025 coverage rating was modest, and address regressions from cornerback Dru Phillips and safety Tyler Nubin, both of whom saw declines in tackling and coverage metrics. He also oversees the development of former first‑round pick Deonte Banks and seventh‑round pick Korie Black. The Giants aim to strengthen their secondary as part of broader efforts across the NFL, where all 32 teams are evaluating roster and coaching adjustments during training camp.

The coaching staff, including defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson, hopes the revamped scheme and focused coaching will elevate the secondary’s play and contribute to a more competitive season for the Giants.
