Governor Kathy Hochul announced a package of gun‑safety actions for New York State. The plan calls for the State Police to prioritize on‑site inspections of firearm dealers whose inventory is linked to guns recovered in crimes, and to work with the Attorney General’s Office on possible enforcement actions.
The state will expand the Interstate Task Force on Illegal Guns, a regional partnership that includes agencies from neighboring northeastern states, and will launch a public‑awareness campaign aimed at dealers to remind them of existing New York laws. Hochul also said she will introduce legislation that would require all firearm sales to be conducted in person, a measure that would need approval from the state legislature.
These actions are presented as a response to more than 30 regulatory proposals released by the U.S. Department of Justice and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, which the governor says could loosen federal gun controls and make it easier for dangerous individuals to obtain weapons.
