New York Governor Kathy Hochul Ends 287(g) ICE Partnerships Amid Midterm Party Turmoil

Governor Kathy Hochul announced that New York State will require twelve local law‑enforcement agencies to terminate their 287(g) agreements with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The move follows the state’s Local Cops, Local Crimes Act, which bars local agencies from entering, renewing or extending such immigration‑enforcement pacts. Agencies have been told to report on their status by 14 August, with full termination required by 25 August. Republican Congressman Mike Lawler condemned the decision, accusing Hochul of prioritising undocumented immigrants.

At the same time, the nation’s 2026 midterm election cycle is being rattled by internal crises in both major parties. Republicans grapple with Donald Trump’s continued influence, a lingering war with Iran and inflation concerns, while Democrats face a growing split between moderates and progressives, highlighted by Wisconsin Lieutenant Governor Sara Rodriguez withdrawing from the governor’s race after a campaign‑finance scandal. These developments heighten uncertainty ahead of November’s contests.
