New York Governor quadruples tax credits for volunteer first responders
New York Governor Kathy Hochul has signed legislation that quadruples the personal income tax credit for eligible volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers. The annual credit for individuals will increase from $200 to $800, while the credit for married couples filing jointly will rise from $400 to $1,600.
State officials noted the measure aims to address recruitment challenges, as the statewide volunteer force has declined from approximately 120,000 in the early 2000s to around 80,000 today. The expansion is intended to recognize the personal sacrifices of first responders and encourage younger generations to join the service.
In addition to the tax relief, Hochul announced a $1 million grant for the Village of Hempstead Volunteer Fire Department to upgrade outdated radio equipment. This is part of the state’s Volunteer Fire Infrastructure and Response Equipment (V-FIRE) program, which has invested a total of $50 million to assist volunteer departments with equipment, protective gear, and facility improvements.
