New York gubernatorial candidates clash over energy costs and spending

New York gubernatorial candidates Kathy Hochul and Bruce Blakeman are clashing over economic issues and state spending. Governor Hochul has launched a statewide enrollment drive for the State’s Energy Affordability Program, which offers qualifying households discounts of up to $500 annually on utility bills. The program recently expanded eligibility to include residents earning below the state or area median income. This initiative follows a separate $1 billion energy relief effort that includes one-time rebates of up to $200.

Republican challenger Bruce Blakeman has criticized the governor’s energy policies, characterizing the discount programs as insufficient and accusing Hochul of attempting to buy votes. In separate campaign efforts, Blakeman has distributed mailers to suburban voters in Westchester County, attempting to link Hochul to New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. The mailers claim Hochul is implementing a ‘socialist agenda’ by using state taxpayer funds to support city initiatives, such as universal childcare and addressing budget deficits.
