New York implements second year of statewide school cellphone ban
New York K-12 schools are entering the second year of a statewide bell-to-bell cellphone ban. The policy prohibits the use of phones, smartwatches, tablets, and other internet-connected devices during school hours, including lunch periods and transitions between classes. Basic flip phones used solely for calling and texting are typically permitted.
Under the enforcement protocols observed in several Hudson Valley schools, students caught violating the ban must surrender their devices to the main office. The devices are not returned to the student at the end of the period or day; instead, a parent or guardian must physically visit the school to retrieve them in person.
While a statewide survey of school workers indicated that 80 percent believe the ban has had a positive effect, the policy remains a point of contention among parents. Some supporters view the measure as necessary, while others express concern regarding their ability to contact their children immediately in an emergency.
